4 steps to your Goal
I learned this from mental performance coach Brian Cain and have found it the best way to set goals and stay accountable. The process is 4 easy steps.
Set your intention or goal. Even better: write it down, make it specific, and post it some where you can see it every day
Schedule it. At what time and where are you going to work on your goal each day? Even better, what’s your cue to remind you to do it. Put it in your google calendar or any scheduling device.
Measure it. How are you measuring your progress or goal.? Even better, write down your measurements daily.
Reflect and Refocus. When are you reflecting on your goal progress and how are you making adjustments along the way?
Lets say you wanted to become a better three point shooter.
What is your goal? Let’s make it specific. I want to shoot 40% from 3 this season. So if you know on average you need to shoot 30% higher when when practicing by yourself. You know you need to get 70% when practicing. So your goal is to become a 70% 3 point shooter this offseason in your individual workouts. Then you post a sticky note by your toothbrush that says “My goal is to be a 70 % three point shooter this offseason.”
When are you going to practice? What’s your cue? First thing in the morning after breakfast, I’m going to go to my local gym and practicing my shooting. Once you know your time schedule that in your phone for every day you want to train.
How are you going to measure it? I am going to shoot 100 three’s every day at the end of my workout and track my accuracy. I’m going to record at least 10 shots on video so I can see my mechanics. Now that you know how your going to record, make it easy. Maybe you start a google doc or use your notes section for a reminder to record each day.
Reflect and Refocus: At nighttime before bed each night I will watch my form and notice any adjustments I want to make. Each Sunday I will check in with my coach/trainer/parent so they can also review the film for a second opinion. I will journal my adjustments throughout my training. Now you have a daily and a weekly review that holds you accountable.
It’s that simple. Let’s goooooooooooooooooooooo!
