Bright Lines

Lawyers coined the term bright lines as a good thing on a contract because it is clear on what is being agreed upon. Fuzzy lines can make things confusing and problematic when unexpected scenario’s arrive.

When preparing for training we want to make our own bright lines. When I was younger I wanted to become a better shooter; so I made a goal to practice shooting more. This worked at first and I did become a better shooter but after awhile it was easy to slack off and then become disappointed in my self. Some days I would shoot in the morning but then I would push it back to night and then it was push back to the next day. Then maybe the next day it would rain so after a couple days I hadn’t practiced at all. You can see how this fuzzy line of making a goal to just shoot more can be confusing.

When I made bright lines in my shooting, is when I really excelled as a shooter. I decided every morning in the Summer I’m going to shoot at the park at 10:00am and make 100 shots. Each week I’m going to change the type of shots ( corner 3’s , off the dribble, etc). If I can’t train that day at 10am ( bad weather, court full, some event happening) I will try that night at 5 pm or make it up next day. I knew every week I had to make at least 500 shots ( sometimes I would take the weekend off). Once I created these bright lines my shooting really took off and I had more confidence in games because I had actually tracked my progress and knew I put in the work. Then you can build on your bright lines. As I got older this was closer to 400 makes a day, etc.

What do you want to get better at? Do you have bright lines, well let’s make them. If your original bright lines are too hard or tricky to accomplish no worries; adjust them and try again. Bright lines help actualize your goals. Let’s go!
